Blood Facts

Blood, the life-maintaining fluid, circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries, carrying out numerous crucial functions. It not only provides nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to our bodies but also carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide. It fights against infection, aids in wound healing, and constitutes about 7% of the body's weight. Here are some facts to underline the significance of this precious fluid:

  • There is absolutely no substitute for human blood. Medical science has made tremendous advancements, but manufacturing artificial blood still remains an unachieved milestone.
  • Every three minutes, someone somewhere is in dire need of a life-sustaining blood transfusion.
  • One in ten individuals entering a hospital will need blood, underlining the constant demand for blood donations.
  • Regrettably, less than half the population is eligible to give blood, making it all the more important for eligible donors to contribute.
  • Red blood cells, vital for carrying oxygen to the body's organs and tissues, have a shelf life of only 42 days (six weeks), necessitating regular replenishment of the blood supply.
  • Certain medical conditions and treatments require frequent blood transfusions. For instance, victims of car accidents can require up to 50 units of blood per hour until they stabilize. Similarly, sickle cell patients can require up to four units of blood per month for life.
  • A single unit of blood can make a significant difference. Even brain surgery can require anywhere from two to 25 units of blood.
  • A newborn baby has about one cup of blood in his or her body, showcasing the miraculous efficiency of this fluid.
  • Our body's primary defense against infection, white blood cells, form a crucial component of blood.
  • Interestingly, there are about one billion red blood cells in just two to three drops of blood, and they live about 120 days in the circulatory system.

Understanding these facts underscores the irreplaceable and lifesaving power of blood and the importance of regular blood donations. Every blood donation is a gift of life.
